Choice: A Spoken Word Poetry
We all want to enjoy the sweetness of freedom, Justice and happiness. In this world of illusion where you see one thing, but the reality is different. Thirsty to be respected, just as we crave to be valued.
Often time we think, that if only the 'society' will give us a chance, we can not just change, but save the world.
I once asked a friend why she chose to wear what she wore, outside,
though it makes her uncomfortably happy. She couldn't lie but said, society thinks she looks good (in them).
See, in the pursuit of happiness and the quest for 'liberation,' Justice and (embracing) the fact that we all are slaves; to either our desires; our various slave masters; our parents, peers, teachers, the CEOs or the politicians are key.
Last time I checked, you didn't chose your race, your ethnicity or gender. Subhanallah you didn't even chose your parents and DNA - that priceless molecular basis of heredity passed on to you from generations -- Someone, does!
The same friend who was subconsciously subservient to the perspective of society, was standing on the podium orating the rhythm of gender privilege masquerading as equality, Instead of equity(?) Deluded by slave masters?
But the dynamics of societies over time shows that, it is even almost better to be a woman. For women reproduce and perpetuate LIFE itself. Given each woman her intrinsic worth. Regardless of who she is or what she does.
This is why we often prioritise the safety and comfort of a woman than a man in cases of emergencies and disasters.
When men risks life to make a living in dusty and dangerous works like coal mining, garbage collection, constructions, and foot soldiers, and the male relative acting as an UNPAID-BODY-GUARD, one would not hesitate to believe the activist who claimed 'Women are human beings, while men are human doing.'
But because privilege is invincible to those who have it, my friend's masters wouldn't let her see, let alone appreciate any.
Are you trying to see that while my friend was deluded struggling for the 'female role,' she was made to be quiet of the suffering of men as a result of social roles but still expect him to continue his traditional disposal role?
Denying a common reality. Failing to understand or accommodate the natural proclivities of genders.
I mean, ask John Ray, and he'll tell you, all species, from beets to primates have different physiology, anatomy and gender roles.
Why is the pill so hard to swallow?
But just as she least expect it, life sets her a challenge! To test her courage and willingness to the cause she preached. Time also stood by, to informed her of how she was ROBBED. And in that moment, there was no point in pretending that nothing has happened. The challenge was obvious. So, she fainted.
See, all these years, had my friend listened, we'd have discuss about the very one formula the slave masters injected; Pro-choice viewpoint; few children, if any; Education and career before marriage, or even instead of marriage. And shamed into thinking there was something wrong with her if she preferred a husband and
children to a childless career.
In reality, every woman needs the support and protection of her father. And the father of her sons and daughters.
We'd also have talk about the fallacy of her masters' believe. That women can only succeed in overcoming subjugations and oppressions, by asserting their dominance over men, by abandoning the home, or by shirking the kitchen and all domesticity.
May be she might have think twice about the ambiguous factions of her masters. Who appeared as socialists, liberals, conservatives, E-T-C. With no shared value system or moral guidance. With a definition of Justice like a bird with one wing.
Or even better, had she asked Rab'ib ibn Amir (r) of why Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam. He'd have told her he was here to take people out from been subservient to people like them, to be servants of Allah (swt). From the injustices of their beliefs, to the Justice of Islam and from the narrowness of this life, to the fair of this life and the hereafter.
The key to serenity and liberty, is understanding your true slavery and who your true slave master is. That's your Rabb; the One Who loves you; Who nurtures you; Who knows what's good for you.
The true liberated ones aren't the ones who obey their desires. Not those who are enslaved by the shackles of systemic effect of society. But those who realise their true Master.
So congratulations! Congratulations to you who's pleased with Allah as your Lord and Abul Qaseem upon whom be peace as your Prophet.
Congratulations for offering the 5 daily Salah, fasting Ramadhan, for the charity. And pilgrimage to Makkah Al-Mukarrama.
Congratulations for observing the Hijab. Not just because it's your freedom. But because, it's your liberated form of slavery, to the Lord of mankind.
Congratulations for being dutiful to your parents and obeying your husband. For the compassion upon your kids. Congratulations for the great reward, tranquillity and contentment.
And now that my friend is gone, to save others from fainting and collapsing, an internal change has to come about. As the Ummah of 'islah' is demonized, we've to change our template. That, is a necessity. Those things we inherited and practice culturally, what we preach about Islam has to be relevant today. In accordance with the Sunnah. Addressing every single issue. I mean, to answer the title 'KHAIRUL UMMAH.'
PEACE!
